Into the Skin of It!

With over 9 years of experience as an esthetician, I’m sharing my journey from a makeup enthusiast to a skincare advocate. I’m going to cover the intertwining of skin health and mental wellbeing, promote education and provide inspiration for better self-care. Through this blog, I aim to help others achieve holistic beauty and confidence.

5–8 minutes

This isn’t just another skincare blog—this is a journey to your ultimate glow-up, inside and out! Let’s dive in.

Hi, beloved! My name is Kerlyne Hosana, but you can call me ZANA. I’m a licensed master aesthetician and manicurist located in Rocky Hill, CT, with over 9 years of experience caring for the skin and nails of hearts just like you. Getting here has truly been a journey for me! If I had to do it all over again, I’d do so in a heartbeat. The impact I’ve been blessed to have on others has made it all well worth it. I started out with an unhealthy obsession with makeup. I didn’t go anywhere without “putting my face on” first! 😂 I mean I had over 250 different types of lipsticks/ lipstains/lip crayons/etc. The definition of a lipstick junkie! A true addiction… Do you have any vices like I did? How have you managed them?

So! With my love for makeup growing, it wasn’t long before friends and family started asking me to do theirs. And, well… I did. A LOT. For free. Child, the amount of money that I left on the table?! 😩 I can imagine I’m not alone on this one! lol Anyhoo! One day a friend of mine asked me why I didn’t do this professionally. Honestly, the thought had never occurred to me, but once she said that, I jumped right into that rabbit hole! 🕳️🐇

Back to School

I started researching what it would take to do makeup professionally in MA, which was the state I was living in at the time and quickly discovered that if I wanted to do this thing right, I had to go back to school and either become an esthetician or cosmetologist. Well! I had no patience or desire to learn how to do my own hair let alone anyone else’s so guess where I ended up? That’s right! ☝🏾🤓 School it was. I really wanted to go to Catherine Hinds, because their 900 Hr program seemed really intensive and robust, but logistically Elizabeth Grady was where I ended up having to go, because it was closer to my daughter’s school. My experience there wasn’t stellar, but I will say I had a few amazing teachers that helped shape my view of the industry. Have you ever had a teacher that impactful? I’d love to know their name!

Falling In Love With Skin

Once the program started, I couldn’t wait to get to the makeup section which didn’t start until roughly halfway through the program. Until then, I was stuck learning words, I didn’t think I’d ever use in life like, stratum corneum and arrector pili muscle. I was just doing the bare minimum to get to my love… makeup! But something happened along the way… I saw myself finding interest in some of these terms. I was understanding the skin and what it might need more. I discovered that I had been caring for my skin asbent-mindedly well, but had taken for granted something that that was what afforded me the luxury of being able to do my makeup so well. Beloved, as I got to know and understand it better, I completely fell in love with skin. 🥰🥰🥰 I had finally realized that taking good care of it gave me the perfect canvas to work with. And I wasn’t going to keep that to myself. This mindset shift was a pivotal moment for me. I was barely 200 hours into my 600 hour program and I had just decided that makeup was no longer important to me. It was now all about the canvas we use for that makeup. The Glorious Skin!

More than Skin

As I’ve grown in the field and helped hearts better care for their skin, I noticed that there was a correlation between the skin and my clients’ mental health. The way they carried and talked about themselves was different dependent on the state of their skin and the routines they had. Those with poor overall skin health and/or little to no routine tended to display poor mental health characteristics and often had medical issues that seemed preventable had they had better hygiene practices in relation to how they cared for their skin. Clients that had a pretty good skincare routine and their skin showed good health and care seemed happier, healthier, more confident and optimistic about things. And so, I embarked on a journey to help others better not just their skin health, but also their mental and emotional health through education, inspiration, and motivation.

The Heart of It All

I’m starting this blog, because I believe that true beauty starts from within. Your skin is so much more than just your skin. It’s your confidence. It’s your health.
